Hair care after hair transplant

Patient should have someone that can drive home as the patient has been sedated during surgery. Proper sleep with elevated head during the first seven days is advised. Take proper medicines as prescribed by the doctor. Icing should be done in order to avoid postoperative swelling just above eyebrows.

Hair care: Gently wash hairs especially in the first five days. Scrubbing should be avoided. Blasting the scalp with water should be avoided. Rising of scalp with cup. Apply a gentle conditioner to avoid itching. Dye hair before transplant as it is not appropriate to be done after surgery. Proper hydration before and after the surgery. Hair Fall in transplanted areas in the first few weeks so don’t panic as these will re-grow in a few months.

Things to Avoid: Avoid driving due to sedation. Flat sleeping should not be done. If there is swelling then use a recliner as a bed sheet.  Ignore labels on medicines and take antibiotics. Do not take too much meditation especially with an empty stomach as it can cause issues related to health. Icing should not forget in order to heal.

Hair related don’ts:         Do not wash hair for the first 48 hours after hair surgery. Washing can be done on the third day. Avoid aggressive washing also. Direct steaming should not be done rather a cup for rinsing should be used. Dying after surgery is prohibited. So, if it is necessary it should be done after 4 weeks. Harsh chemicals of dye can affect transplanted follicles of hair as they are insensitive stages for the first few weeks after transplantation. Do not apply ice directly to the scalp, only just above eyebrows. Hair care products should not be harsh and on itchy areas do not apply strong chemicals. Avoid scratching of treated areas. At the times when the sun is at peak, do not expose the scalp to it like in the noon. If going outside during these hours is very necessary then do not stay too much in the sun. If someone is on vacations after surgery then avoid sunburn and scuba diving. Hat wearing should be avoided within 72 hours of transplantation. Usually, scabs form at the treated site so if a cap or hat is worn it will be a problem. We provide written instructions at our hair transplant clinic in Lahore Pakistan so that patients can read at home and follow these instructions.

Health related don’ts:     do not forget to take proper water after transplantation procedure because it helps in recovery procedure. Water should take as body weight. Do not panic if some of the hairs start to fall in a few weeks because they regrow within a few months. Hair falling does not mean that follicles are damaged. It commonly occurs after a transplantation procedure. Even more healthy and thick regrowth occurs after falling. Does not sleep on the side of the stomach if it cannot be avoided then use a recliner. Heavy exercises are not good immediately after this procedure. If exercising is very necessary then do moderate or mild exercises like yoga. If the bike is to be ridded then use a helmet and goggles. Heavy exercises cause excessive sweating that is not good after treatment so in order to avoid sweating these should not be done. Other activities like unwinding are also prohibited. Alcohol can cause dehydration that can elongate the time of recovery and enhance the discomfort risk. In addition to it, blood pressure is also on the higher side which reduces the supply of blood required for providing proper nutrition to the head. Alcohol intake is prohibited in the first few days of treatment. For someone who is a smoker, not smoking is also recommended specially for a few months as it also affects blood pressure. Take liquid nicotine, gum of nicotine and its patches in the first month after transplant. In first 7 days, sex is also prohibited. As it lowers blood pressure which affects the treatment. Moreover it also causes sweating that is also not good for recovery. It has adverse effects on formation of healthy scabs and enhances the chances of infection. Do not eat too much fast food and soda.
